Cotton Ends Friday with Strength

Cotton futures posted gains heading into the weekend as contracts were mostly steady to 12 points higher. December was up 11 points this week. The US dollar index was back down $0.370 on the day to $97.845, with crude oil futures 22 cents higher. Commitment of Traders data showed the managed money crowd in cotton futures and options increasing their bearish bet as of September 23rd by 2,943 contracts, taking their net short to 62,004 contracts. Cotton futures are trading with Thursday losses of 1 to 42 points across most contracts. The outside markets are pressure factors, as the US dollar index is back up $0.582 on the day to $98.100 with crude oil futures 28 cents lower. Export Sales data from this morning showed just 86,094 RB of cotton sold in the week of 9/18, a marketing year low. Shipments were a 3-week high at 137,223 RB. Cotton futures are trading with 30 to 58 point gains on the Wednesday session. Today is first notice day for October. The outside markets are mixed, as the US dollar index is back up $0.627 on the day to $97.520 with crude oil futures $1.39 higher. Tuesday’s online auction from The Seam showed 910 sales at an average price of 62,86 cents/lb. The Cotlook A Index was unchanged at 77.85 cents on September 23. Cotton futures were weaker on Wednesday, with contracts down 37 to 53 points across the nearbys. The US dollar index was up $0.392 on the day to $96.640. The Fed cut rates by 25 basis points, as expected on Wednesday. Crude oil futures were $0.59 lower. The Seam reported 909 bales sold on Tuesday at an average price of 63.60 cents/lb.
